Job title: Project Manager: GCBR Spekboomveld / Thicket Restoration Project
Duration: 1-year fixed term contract, effective 1 August 2023 - 31 July 2024. A further 5-year extension will be upon review against project deliverables (performance-based contract).
Location: Riversdale, Western Cape (the successful candidate must be flexible and willing to relocate to the Eastern Cape from 2024 – 2028, if necessary)
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Remuneration: R80 000 TCTC per month
Purpose of position: To establish and manage the first phase (1 year) and second phase (5 years) of a 40-year project restoring 16 000 ha of subtropical thicket ecosystems, with a deliverable of producing Verified Carbon Units for a multinational energy company.
Qualifications: A formal project management certificate or equivalent is required. A recognised tertiary qualification in nature conservation and/or biological sciences will be an advantage.
Languages: English (fluent), Afrikaans (fluent) and IsiXhosa (basic)
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (PHASE 1/YEAR 1 PLANNING)
✔ Compile a land lease benchmarking study and develop landowner agreement templates
✔ Craft a comprehensive project implementation plan with schedules, budgets and SOP’s
✔ Define the project scope, goals and deliverables in collaboration with landowners and other relevant stakeholders
✔ Contract, negotiate and engage with landowners on a regular basis
✔ Manage and coordinate inputs from service providers to develop a project design document (PDD)
✔ Contract a validation and verification body (VVB) to ratify the PDD for approval
✔ Develop a framework in support of the Social Development Fund to create sustainable community practices
✔ Lead and manage field teams to deliver against projects goals in the planning phase
✔ Ensure all project activities complies to relevant laws and regulations
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
✔ At least 10 years’ experience in managing and overseeing complex projects with a high level of stakeholder engagement, of which 5 years must have been at a senior level
✔ Strong financial and business acumen
✔ Skillful negotiator
✔ Excellent leadership, organisational and communication skills, able to establish networks and connect with a diverse group of people
✔ Excellent people manager
✔ Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite coupled with experience in project management software and GIS
✔ Adaptable with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
✔ Extensive knowledge and experience in health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) management
✔ Must have a passion for ecosystem restoration and a desire to make a positive impact in the community
✔ Must live the GCBR values of integrity, innovation, collaboration and sustainability
✔ Horticultural experience will be advantageous
✔ Operational management of ecosystem restoration teams will be advantageous
